Open TLDs - Let's Piss Up The Internet

I've been watching and reading the BBC news stories about the increasingly more serious talks about opening up the Internet's TLD system - and to be quite frank I think that the idea is complete shit.

Just for people who don't know what's going on, there are currently talks going on is Paris about opening up the top level domain system (.com, .net, .co.uk) to include custom top level domains, so, you could have yourwebsitename.anything, instead of yourwebsitename.com.

My initial response to this is what the hell is the freaking point? I see the advantages, infinity domains available that will technically never run out, but it looks stupid. People don't need new TLDs to remember, because that will just end up to be confusing. Yeah, let's start a new website using the domain tesco.value, that totally won't look retarded or anything - or indeed overcomplicate anything to the extent that the only way people will remember it is by using a search engine.

Another way I think this will fuck up the entire internet is the way country domains are structured - think .co.uk and .fr. People identify a website's origin by it's TLD, so, how is that going to work now that we have all of this crap introduced - people could be using .mysiteukcomfr and screwing up stuff like that.

Another reason - I bet it will be a complete monopoly. I bet the only people who will be able to afford their own top level domain will be large companies. Why the fuck should they take control of the internet? And what about current domain registrars - what will happen to them? Will they continue to operate as normal or will they slowly go out of business?

The whole idea to me seems fucked up. The simpleton retards who think that this would be a good idea quite seriously need a proper explanation of what the internet is - and why the current top level domain system is in place for. Fuck it - let's just get rid of TLDs completely - catch me on http://alanedwardes/ for my next series of posts.
